Adolescent Counseling (15-17yrs)
We have to acknowledge that adolescence is that time of transition where we begin to introduce to children that life isn't pretty, that there are difficult things, there are hard situations, it's not fair. Bad things happen to good people.
- Laurie Halse Anderson
Adolescents is a challenging transition for both teenagers and parents. Teens are struggling to find a sense of self and personal identity through intense exploration of personal values, beliefs, and goals; while parents struggle to guide their teenagers through difficult things and hard situations. The goals and behaviors of teens often times clash with the values and desires of their parents; leading to fights, arguments, and self-destructive behavior as part of a teenager’s “rebellion”. Often times parents are left feeling overwhelmed, not knowing “what to do” or how to handle the intense emotions of their teen.
These conflicts are more common than you think, but you and your teen are not alone.
Common Issues Teens Struggle with Today:
* Depression * Stress
* Bullying/Cyberbulling * Sexuality/Sexual Activity
* Drug and alcohol use * Self-esteem and body image
* Social media & sexting * Social and parental pressure
* Social media & sexting * Academic problems
* Cyber addiction * Uncertainty about the future
* Struggles finding meaning, purpose, and direction in life
* Pressures in intimate relationships/dating
* Parental rejection and conflict
How Therapy Can Help Both Adolescents and Parents
Often times teenagers are afraid and unwilling to open up and talk about their personal issues and struggles with their parents; however, they also need a space based on trust and support to address their emergent issues and guidance through difficult situations and major life decisions.
Building trust is foundational for helping teens process their personal struggles, explore major life decisions and consequences of behavior, and help them learn how to become more responsible adults.
Additionally, I help teens learn important life skills, manage distressing thoughts and emotions in healthy ways, work through interpersonal conflicts with parents and peers, develop self-esteem and self-worth, and guide them through difficult life transitions.
What I offer parents is more effective parenting strategies to support their children through difficult times, as well as resources and information to help them make the major life transition from childhood to adulthood.
