Child Counseling (6-12yrs) - Synergetic Play Therapy

“When we are children we seldom think of the future. This innocence leaves us free to enjoy ourselves as few adults can. The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind.”

- Patrick Rothfuss

Firstly, my heart goes out to all parents who are struggling to connect with, raise, and guide their children in the complex and challenging world we live in today. You came here because something just doesn’t feel right. You feel overwhelmed, worried, not in control, or concerned about your child's well-being. You see your child struggling and will do anything to support them, but feel powerless and lost. You may have even read the best parenting books on the market, yet things don’t seem to improve with your child.

Common Issues Children Experience:

Through Play Therapy, I help children work with a variety of emotional, behavioral, and developmental issues:

* Anxiety     * Crisis situations     * Grief and loss     * Depression

* Problems at school or at home     * Outbursts of anger, defiance, or aggression

* Feeling alone and lost

* Struggles forming relationships with other children (siblings, friends, classmates)

* Life transitions (divorce, separation, changing schools, moving, etc.)

Creative play, imaginary adventures filled with danger, fighting against the evil villain, and being a wild man fill a boy's heart.

Play therapy focuses on an unconditional bond of trust, empathy, patience, compassion, and support shared between child and therapist. The best part of play therapy is it gives children permission to be authentic and expressive, helping them better understand their body and emotions in a way which creates greater resilience, emotional control, and decision making later on in life.

Of course, you as a parent are an integral part of a child’s life, and are critical for continued support and growth of your child. WholeHearted Therapy LLC is dedicated to collaborating with parents to support their child's needs for growth, challenge, nurturing, and self-identity both inside and outside of the play room.

A child's brain is rapidly growing, wiring, processing, and pruning as it absorbs tons of sensory data. Their brain is highly adaptable throughout its' growth... including its ability to adapt to pain and fear. SPT gets to the root of a child's internal struggle by transforming the child (and family) from the inside out.

Synergetic Play Therapy (SPT) & What You Can Expect?

During play therapy, children create play that resembles difficult or traumatic experiences they are struggling with internally. Play therapy is a unique modality of psychotherapy which helps children connect to and understand their inner experiences at the deepest and most profound levels, allowing for deep healing to naturally occur.

The Synergetic Play Therapy model developed by Lisa Dion at the Play Therapy Institute of Colorado (www.synergeticplaytherapy.com) is a cutting-edge form of psychotherapy focused on a child's neurobiological development. Often times children struggle integrating extreme emotions: anger, emotional constriction, hyper-vigilance, helplessness, anxiety, isolation/depression, and irritability. When these extreme emotions become frozen in their nervous system, children often experience a wide-range of emotional and behavioral issues later on in life.

Utilizing Synergetic Play Therapy creates a space where a child can be authentic. Encouraging a child's emotional expression and modeling self-regulation helps children attune to their body and emotions, teaching them how to cope with distressing emotions and sensations when they arise in the present moment.

Benefits of Play Therapy

Although everyone involved benefits from Play Therapy, you and your child will benefit the most from the power of play therapy. Parents report identifiable changes in their child's behavior, a reduction in intensity and frequency of argument, temper tantrums, and outbursts.

Parents also have the opportunity to learn practical strategies they can use to support their child through difficult experiences, transitions, and emotions, encourage healthy behaviors and habits, promote more effective communication strategies between parent-child, and help their child become the best they can be.
